STREAMLINE and Local Taxis have expanded their fleet to cater for an increasing demand for disabled-friendly cars.
In the past two weeks, the Local and Streamline taxis have purchased a further four disabled-friendly taxis, increasing their disabled-friendly fleet to six and both taxi firms' total fleet to 135. The taxis, all Fiat Doblos, offer easy access for wheelchair users.
The taxi driver opens the back door, lowers the ramp and wheels in the wheelchair. The passenger is secured by a seatbelt while they remain in the wheelchair. Three passengers can travel with the wheelchair - including the wheelchair user.
Bob Gilbert, business manager for Streamline and Local Taxis said: "We're getting more and more calls asking for our wheelchair cars - last Sunday we had five calls in one day.
Streamline's company chairman, Dave Rhodes, said: "The taxis are great for disabled people who previously would have had difficulties getting into a taxi."
