Yorkshire visible from space

The sign spread out in a field in North Yorkshire

NORTH Yorkshire took its place alongside the Great Wall Of China when it was visible from space.

Cattal was chosen as the location for a giant white banner bearing the legend yorkshire.com

The stunt was the work of the Yorkshire Tourist Board who chose Cattal for the event, due to it being the geographical centre of the county.

The 54,300 sq ft sign was unfurled as part of the launch of the tourist board's new Make Yorkshire Yours campaign.

Tourism is worth an estimated £6.1 billion per year to Yorkshire's economy and more than 104 million UK and international travellers who visit the region each year.

Joanna Royle, marketing director at Yorkshire Tourist Board, said: "With such a large, rich and diverse region, it became clear that the only way we could put the whole of Yorkshire on the map was through, quite literally, a big idea."

Press should have done their research. The Great Wall of China isn't visible from space. It isn't such a great wall either - large chunks of it aren't made of stone and it isn't contiguous.

This is hillarious made me laugh out loud.

There are numerouswalls in China, built by various dynasties over centuries, if you add them all together it is over 50,000km long. However the main Wall or Great wall as it is known is made of stone and brick and is over 4000 miles long, to put that in perspective that is further than York to New York.

So yes pretty unimpressive feat of engineering in 200 BC

The often misquoted myth is that The Wall is visible from space, the only man made object visible.

In fact the myth is that it is the only man made object visible from THE MOON. Many man made objects are visible from low earth orbit, roads, bridges, cities, dams, ships etc.

It's a myth anyway - it's not visible from the moon with the naked eye.

The 54,300 sq ft square was unfurled as part of the launch of the tourist board's new Make Yorkshire Yours campaign

This story makes it sound as though it was an incredibly huge square that was unfurled. However, yesterday....

It is anchoring the 157,000 sq ft retail development on the 14.48 acre site which is opposite a new Morrisons supermarket, which opened last October

....was stated in the article about the new retail park on Foss Islands Road.

This means the advertising 'square' was only 1/3 of the size of the retail space in the new development.....so when you compare them it's hardly huge news is it?

I hope the astronauts/aliens that see this have good eyesight.

I can't even make out the logo in the photo (now in the story) which was probably taken from the height of only a few hundred feet
