LEEDS United boss Gary McAllister believes his side have the "psychological advantage" in their League One play-off semi-final against Carlisle despite losing last night's home leg 2-1, writes Dave Flett.

The two teams will meet again at Brunton Park on Thursday and McAllister feels Dougie Freedman's 96th-minute goal could prove crucial.

Goals from David Graham and Marc-Bridge Wilkinson had earlier given the Cumbrians a 2-0 lead, but McAllister now believes the battle to face Doncaster or Southend in a Wembley final will go to the wire. He said: "I think the goal has got to give us a psychological advantage.

"They would have been happy to take us back there with a two-goal lead, but they won't know whether to protect their lead now or go out and win. We know what we need to do - go out and score goals. The tie lasts 180 minutes and I have no doubt it will go down to the last minute at Carlisle."

Ex-York City manager John Ward, now in charge at Carlisle, denied Freedman's last goal had provided a shattering blow to his side.

Ward said: "You never want to concede a goal but it's always a possibility at Leeds and I'm delighted with the result and the way we played. We've still got a big job to do."

Isn't there the Yorkshire Post for this kind of thing?

Well, Nomadic if you want a bit of York gossip, how about Michael Ingham coming back to play in goal? Apparently he's been in talks.

And there is no reason at all why the Yorkshire Evening Press shouldn't cover Leeds, it's not like they are missing YCFC stories out to make space for it.

It was perfectly legitimate, if a bit lucky. Worth bearing in mind that the first Carlisle goal came as a result of a corner which was clearly not a corner. So I'd say things were evened out.
On the whole though, Carlisle deserved to win, they outplayed Leeds for most of the game, and their goalkeeper was superb.
Leeds were short of ideas and I think the importance of the game overawed them. It was difficult to see how they finished up the 2nd best side in the league.

You're right there was cheating - blatant time-wasting by the Carlisle players which is why one of them was booked!

I'm no Leeds fan but it's a minimum of 4 minutes. Add the little fracas involving Pete Sampras during injury time and the extra minutes was about right.

As one of the many creditors of Mr Bates I find it hard to wish any success to Leeds as long as he is at the helm. This is despite being a keen supporter in the past. The whole points deduction and the timing of the administration last year was a con and was pleased to see that the deduction this year was upheld.

I'm not a Leeds fan but Carlisle shot themselves in the foot. They were wasting time and the ref must be applauded for adding the extra couple of minutes. If only every ref was as brave.

As Leeds is also closer to my home town, I would rather see them promoted. Afterall, I am more likely to be asked by my son - who incidentally likes Barca (but he's only 8 and there's time yet...) - to go and watch Leeds as opposed to Carlisle.

Leeds were short of ideas up front but the Carlisle goalie played a blinder!

If there's no reason the Press shouldn't cover Leeds, there's no reason they shouldn't cover other third division clubs from other counties.

Swindon have had a rather mediocre season ;o)

Good luck to Carlisle for the second leg.

I dont understand the bitterness towards leeds I too follow the ups and downs of York but what have leeds ever done to us except give us a pay day in pre season by coming and giving us a game. Look forward to beating them as a championship side in July I'd rather see them suceed as a Yorkshire side than anything from Lancashire or Yorkshire.

Agree with Nomadic on this one.
Was just like when the Salty Sea Dogs were always Radio York,if i had wanted to listen to them i'd have tuned into Seaside FM or whatever.
As for the resentment towards Leeds, it stems from people thinking that all York fans are Leeds fans in disguise, when in fact we have our own identity.
I've had first hand experience of this following City away from home, when supporters have shouted at us "Whats up,Leeds not at home today?".
Ok, we are on a smaller scale to them, but we are our own club with a heart & tradition of our own.

Hi, I'm a Carlisle fan living in York (born Carlisle by the way). I was at the match last night. I agree that Carlisle were wasting time so they got what they deserved on that score, however they were by far the better side and did not look nervous like the home side. It's interesting to note the TV, the Leeds fans the newspapers and Gary MCallister all think that Leeds are going to Wembley errrrr hello the same people did not give Carlisle a hope from hell at ER. Come on you blues !!!!! " 15 points who gives a f*** " You do Leeds fans, good luck in League one next year
