POLICE sealed off a city centre toilet in York after a dead body was found.

The body of a 42-year-old man was found in the public toilets at St Leonard's Place in York, across the road from the City Art Gallery and close to Bootham Bar during the evening rush hour yesterday.

It is unclear who discovered the body.

Police cordoned off all the entrances to the three sets of public toilets - men's, women's and disabled - shortly after 5pm and officers stood on guard while investigations were carried out.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said they are not treating the death as suspicious and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

He said police received a call from staff at York Hospital at 4.27pm yesterday to say a man's dead body had been brought in by ambulance from the toilets in St Leonard's Place.

He said: "The body of a 42-year-old man was found in the public toilets at St Leonard's Place yesterday afternoon. Police were called by staff at York Hospital at 4.27 to investigate the matter.

"We are not naming the man at this stage and an inquest into the death will be opened and adjourned in due course."
