Toy dog suffers trader's wrath
Bryan Savory with his dog Tilly
Bryan Savory with his dog Tilly

FIRST he banned a middle-aged nurse wearing a hooded lambs' wool cardigan.

Then it was the turn of a two-year-old boy out shopping with his grandfather.

Now a shopkeeper in the Bell Farm area of York has turned his attention to a local dog owner.

Bryan Savory, of Sefton Avenue, says he has been banned from tying his pet up outside Monkton Road Stores And Off Licence while he collects his daily paper.

The pensioner has been walking his shitzu pooch, which is classed as a toy dog, every day for the past five years when he goes to collect his copy of The Press from the shop. Normally he would tie the dog to a railing outside.

But on his latest trip he claims the owner of the store came out and told him that he didn't want the dog, which is called Tilly, anywhere near his property again.

Mr Sefton, 73, said: "She wouldn't do any harm to anybody, she just sits there placidly. I am really quite annoyed about it all, it's not as if she makes a mess, she just sits there, she wouldn't say boo to a goose."

He added that what particularly annoyed him was the shop owner's attitude towards the dog. He claimed that the owner came out, unlooped the dog's lead from the rail and then threw it on the floor.

Mr Sefton said: "I was in the shop at the time and if she had not been the dog she is she could easily have run off."

The Press telephoned and visited the shop but the owner, who declined to give his name, did not want to comment.

But public information held by City of York Council states the licensee is called Claude Wray.

In January of last year The Press reported how the shopkeeper asked a two-year-old boy out with his grandfather to take off the hood on the boy's sweatshirt while he was in the shop.

The grandfather refused out of principle and went to another shop.

The same thing also happened in November 2006 when middle-aged nurse Lorraine Robinson, of Geldof Road, was refused her morning paper for wearing the hood on her lambs' wool cardigan.

At the time she said the owner had tarred her with the same brush as yobs and that she would be boycotting the shop after using it for 40 years.

Have your say

Should dog owners be allowed to tie up placid animals outside shops?

Ah. Still expected the Press to have named, shamed and hung drawn and quartered him though... like they do with people innocent of charges before the verdict comes down (recent copper stories).

but don't you think this guy is justified in going to The Press about this? Maybe the shop-keeper will be persuaded to treat his customers with some more respect...

I left and came back, do you remember the old couple that had the newsagents in the early nineties, now they were really nice as they are at the chemist ,It a real inconvienience having him as the local shopkeeper now hes took over both places

A round up of all big dogs in the area, a communial walk and a social tying up of the dogs outside should solve the problem. To really wind the owner flasks of tea and snacks bought from elsewhere should be handed around?

Someone's actually still buying the press!

Mr Sefton

I wonder who left or took holidays recently - without them on board there's been a huge increase in typos, and straight out editing mistakes.

As long as the adverts are typed correctly - that's where the bulk of their revenue comes in. The "news" is just to fill in the spaces, and keep suckers paying their 40p.
Posted by: haggis, York on 12:08pm Thu 20 Mar 08
M parents used to have this off licence years ago it was a good business with great customers who often had a laugh with my folks, I also live in the same street as Mr Savory and can fully sympathise with him.

I went to this shop a while ago and the shopkeeper had a right go at a lady customer with a young child for letting her lean up against the card counter the lady gave as good as she got though, I was stood waiting to pay for a bar of chocholate when this "shopkeeper" turned to my partner and me and aggressively said "you will get the same if you start".

I have not been in since and won't be doing so.

Great reporting from The Press - NOT! The Shih Tzu is not a Toy dog but a Working dog. That's according to the Kennel Club and they should know.
Also, whilst I agree that the shopkeeper is out of order, there's no way I would leave my dog tied up outside alone for fear that someone would walk off with him. Shih Tzu's are popular tragets for scrotey dognappers. I wouldn't be prepared to take that risk.

I remember my local Spar...it wasn't this one. The ladies working there knew my name, always had a friendly word, never yelled at kids that I saw, and people tied their dogs up all the time outside the door. It wasn't a problem.

The owner of that shop should learn some customer service skills before he finds himself without any customers. I'd definitely not shop there if I lived in the area.

Monkton Rd is part of Muncastergate, which is part of HEWORTH.The Bell Farm Estate ( Bell Farm Ave, Roche Ave, Middleham Ave ) are part of HEWORTH, as is Byland Ave, Pottery Lane , Dodsworth Ave. The Border between HEWORTH and HUNTINGTON is near the YEARSLEY PUB, well past the above mentioned streets.

My local shop has an area specifically for tying dogs leads to, and as long as you are not wearing your hood up with a ski mask on then you are ok to go in, without being constantly followed by a member of staff pretending to be cleaning.
