A good sign for tourists

VISITORS to York are being urged to make the most of one of the city's most historic streets amid fears it is becoming a forgotten zone.
A new sign encouraging tourists to see what Micklegate has to offer has been installed in nearby Nunnery Lane car park in the latest attempt to revitalise one of the main gateways to the city.
It lists a string of Micklegate attractions, including its ancient Bar and churches as well as its array of restaurants and shops, which it hopes will become a regular feature on the city's tourist trail.
The sign, put up by City of York Council after consultation with the street environment officer for Micklegate, is the latest in a number of measures aimed at raising the profile of "peripheral" city streets, which also include Fossgate and Goodramgate, and boosting their businesses by luring more visitors to them.
Proposals currently being considered by the council as a way of breathing new life into these areas include extra marketing, exploring the possibility of staging more York festivals and speciality markets and promoting the city's evening economy.
"This is a welcome addition towards an overall strategy for Micklegate, as well as other peripheral streets around the city centre," said Sandy Fraser, Micklegate's Labour councillor.
"These streets have been struggling of late, with many businesses finding trading conditions especially difficult, so any initiatives which increase footfall there can only help."
Coun Fraser has submitted a motion to City of York Council calling for a plan to be drawn up for revitalising key streets in the city centre, which will go before the local authority again next month.
But his fellow ward councillor Dave Merrett, still believes more needs to be done to boost the profile of Micklegate and other York routes. "The existing strategy to regenerate peripheral streets is critical not only to their success, but to the businesses operating in the city centre as well," he said.
"But our concern is not so much for those more central businesses, who seem to be bucking the national economic trend, but those who are suffering in streets like Micklegate and are leaving vacant premises. There is a danger this could have a knock-on effect."
The council says it is looking to address issues concerning peripheral streets as part of the city centre Area Action Plan.
Have your say
Do you think signs will help to boost city tourism?

Am not surprised tourists stay away from that street at night-time!
No sign will change the fact that it can be a battle zone between 10pm and midnight, check the crime figures!

It's a shame that what hides behind the world famous Micklegate bar is a street that is rapidly becoming little more than a run down thoroughfare of charity shops and closed down takeaways and restaurants during the day and, as franky says, a booze fuelled battle zone on a night.
With strategy and foresight this street could be one of the jewels in York’s crown.

Where the sign is located is a nightime meeting place for some Rrrse action - so I am told.
Julie Gunnell is lovely. See how she simply sparkles and shines in front of egalitarian Merrett and Fraser. If only all democracists were as lovely as Julie.

A nice local breakfast cafe. It does not turn into a battle zone on a night at all!! Have any of you even seen a fight there? try looking a bit further over the bridge!

Perhaps locating the hydaulic urinals in Micklegate would help to revitalise this area!

I've been "doing" Micklegate for years and must admit the last real scrap I saw there was a year or so ago. In truth it's a lot better now than it was 10 years ago but I usually avoid the place when the races are on so miss the real action.
My point about the restaurants and takeaways are that they are mostly shut during the day leading to the "run down" feeling of the place.

As I recall, it wasn't much of a street at all,Rougier street was more interesting at least you didn't have to walk on ugly cobble stones!

yep! Micklegate is not the battle zone that it used to be a few years ago (apart from when the races are on that is) but tourists must be warned that when they reach the bottom of the street that they may experience fighting and verbal abuse from the mindless thugs wearing blach shoes, black trouseres and shirts hanging out. Oh and screaming women peeing in shop doorways wearing pink cowboy hats. Apart from that a lovely street.

What exactly is the purpose of a 'street environment officer and how much are they paid'?
Oh and how did we possibly manage before the job was invented?
This is the reason council tax is always increasing.

Oh and all the grass cutters and the rest of the parks department. If we got rid of the PCSO's and police we could do away with that Police precept as well. I'm on a roll I thinkI've seen a way we can get rid of the Fire Authority Precept ...... It's easy keeping council tax down, don't know why anyone didn't think of it before. i'm sure we'd be able to keep services to a high standard as well

I have even been to Ward Committee meetings and discussed problems with them. It's amazing what you can achieve when you look for solutions instead of whinging on a message board
