Call for Yorkshire Wheel to be permanent attraction
The Yorkshire Wheel
The Yorkshire Wheel

AS York's "big wheel" prepares to celebrate its second birthday, a tourist chief called today for it to become a permanent addition to the city's skyline.

Gillian Cruddas, Chief Executive of Visit York, said the Yorkshire Wheel at the National Railway Museum had attracted thousands of additional visitors to the city and generated significant additional income.

"It has far reaching appeal and has been a hugely important addition to York's wide range of attractions," she said.

'The Yorkshire Wheel has become an iconic part of York's skyline and has added a modern dimension to the city. We'd be very keen to see the wheel stay beyond the planned three years and hope that we can keep it in York."

Her comments came as the museum hinted that the wheel might stay beyond its scheduled minimum stint of three years.

A spokeswoman said that the Wheel continued to be a valuable addition to the city of York and as it moved into its third year, was still attracting visitors from all over the country.

Isn't there an issue with exceeding 3 years in that it could no longer be classed as a temporary structure? I thought no new permanent structure above about 110 feet was allowed within a certain distance of the Minster?

its great i love seeing it lit up and its nowhere near the minster, i don't see any problem with keeping it at all.

Personally I don't see the point of it. The only building that stands out and is worth seeing from The Wheel is the Minster, and the best view of this is still from the top floor of Marks and Spencers.

I, for one, love the Yorkshire Wheel ... I love seeing it lit up on a night and we have been on it twice and the views are spectacular ...specially on a clear day.

I agree the wheel is a good addition to York, but for Gillian Cruddass to claim that it has attracted "thousands of additional visitors to the city" is pushing it a bit. No one comes to York just because it has a big wheel. They could just go to Alton Towers if that was the case.

It has also been a financial lifeline for the NRM, who have reportedly not been fully compensated by Government after free entry to the museum was reintroduced.

Ha the NRM does private do's and lots more to earn its money. They have enough money to employ 2 full time chefs etc. Dont get me wrong i agree with the wheel staying. that cabins are a bit shabby but other then that you get a real good view of leman road. Just wanted to point out that in no way is the NRM even close to financial difficulties.

The NRM has tons of money. Some of the wages they pay are quite stunning for York believe me. The wheel though is a good addition to the skyline though perhaps a new larger one should be built by the river if York is to have a permanent wheel.

Maybe a giant roller coaster next to the Minster would prove to be a financial god sent lifeline for that, with more jobs.

OR, the return of a proper weekly, local market in Parliament Street.

Oops! sorry, that would be for York people and Steve Galloway doesn't use what market we have anyway, CAN'T HAVE THAT.

It's an ugly thing better suited to temporary fairgrounds and places like Blackpool, but it is at least somewhat removed from the main part of York. It lives in trainspotter land, and I'm sure the anoraks love it. Thankfully York's skyline will not be ruined by any similar structures anywhere near the Minster.

Well, they wanted to put the wheel next to the Castle until they realised it would not be acceptable.
