HUNDREDS of rock fans packed into York's Grand Opera House last night to witness the finest of young musical talent.

Fourteen of the city's top bands did battle in the City of York Council's Best Of The Bands 2008.

The hugely popular annual event is organised by the council's Arts And Culture Service.

The eventual winners were declared as The Gilligans.

They win the top prize of seven days of studio time.

Along with the two runners-up, Hannah And The Junk Funk and Sounds And Siren, they also won the chance to take part in a gig at Fibbers, in York.
