UNCERTAINTY surrounds the future of an electronics chain store in York city centre after it was confirmed some of the company's stores may be closed when their leases run out.

A spokesperson for Currys said the retailer did not know whether the Currys.digital store in Coney Street, York, would be closed.

The spokesperson said all Currys.digital stores were going to be reviewed and the firm could not make an announcement about which shops might be closed until after that process was complete.

The spokesperson said a decision on which stores might be closed had not yet been made.

In yesterday's statement, DSG international plc, the parent company of Currys.digital, said: "We have announced the new strategy for the company which includes investment in the majority of our stores and a number of new store format trials.

"Some Currys.digital high street stores may be considered for closure when their leases run out, but as the average leases run for another four to five years, we will not be announcing which stores are being considered for closure until much later down the line."

In a separate statement issued by DSG international plc, the company said: "While the majority of the 177 Currys.digital stores make a positive contribution to the group there are up to 100 stores in attractive catchments that most likely will be the focus for future trading. The remaining stores will be closed as their leases expire."

Len Cruddas, chief executive of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "We'll have to wait and see what happens, but we would be very keen to see this shop remain in the centre of York because it brings an additional dimension to the high street.

"There's not many high streets where you can still buy such a wide range of electronic goods, because they do tend to be gravitating towards the out-of-town shopping centres."

David Scott, leader of the Labour group on City of York Council, said: "It would be a heavy blow to Coney Street if that particular store was to close, and I would hope the council would do all it could to facilitate the DSG international plc group to stay in York.

"What we don't want to see is any of the major retailers leaving the centre of York.

"It's vital for the people who work in that store and for the economic vitality of the centre of York."

DSG international plc said that, under plans in its business review, which was announced yesterday, Currys.digital would become the high street destination for the latest portable technology.

It said: "White goods, small kitchen appliances and personal care products will be replaced by a greater range of laptops, televisions and other digital products and a much greater depth of accessories."

Just a thought-If stores like that close down how are people supposed to go shop lifting,
You can hardly shoplift while buying online.
Also you dont get to browse the items then and decide which one ya wanna rob,

meme - youhat you're a star. I think what you are saying is that things change and you have to move on, embrace what you have, and make the best of it. I couldn't agree more. It's called "free market forces" and really is the only thing that counts in commercial life. I would just wish that all proponents of post offices, etc, etc, would realise this basic facet of life - it moves on!

I rarely buy anything in any of the DSG shops, but they can be useful for looking at things!

I have to say I've generally found their staff to be polite - the problem is that they often know very little about the products they are selling. This is particularly noticeable in PC World, where even basic questions often seem to be met with blank looks.

I bought my television from Dixons - sort of. I went into Dixons having thoroughly enjoyed the hefty city centre car parking charges. A nice young chap showed me the TVs, I found the one I wanted, popped the model number into my mobile, and popped home to order it online for £130 less - and the website didn't try to sell me an extended warranty or special screen cleaner.

The store has nothing unique to offer. Go in to any of the major supermarkets and you can buy the same thing - and you can park outside the door. Or you can buy on-line for better prices. In the future all TVs and monitors will be widescreen (and how can you show are range in a small shop?) and your phone/walkman/PDA/wh
atever will be coming with the cornflakes.

I think there still a place of the store. I like to see and have a play with gadgets I buy from electical shops. But stuff like games and CD's are still ok to buy online.
Yes good point akuma.

Meme has a job and does not want to work for YCC ! but does want to see York prosper in what are clearly going to be very hard times ahead.
YCC needs action not words and to be innovative in attracting and keeping people here but they have ahuge uphill battle as there are a large vociferous bunch of people who think tourists are bad and do not appreciate the spending power and benefits they bring to the City.
I come from Middlesbro and if you want to see what a city without the heritage of York has to offer its residents spend next saturday shopping in Boro town centre..........Then you will know why they all want to come to York!

Not to suprised I was in there the other week just browsing, they had about 5 sales staff wandering about, every member of staff asked if I needed help ,Comet are no better I took a tv cable back the salesman said we needed which we did not, it took 3 people to deal with it they had to ask the manager, they seemed devastated having to do a refund.

you do realise that you DO NOT have to buy where your insurance company tells you. you have the right to buy anywhere you want
It was a kitchen appliance insurance, trust me, I did everything I could to get the product elsewhere or to get them to pay me once I had purchased it, to no avail, they offered me a third of the cost of the appliance if I went elsewhere! It was going to take so long, and for it to be worthless that we had no reasonable choice! I would not buy a battery from them if I could avoid it!
Cheers for your support on the matter though.

I think it would be a shame if it closed. Not all of us have transport to visit out of town shopping centres. I have recently bought a pc and a camera from this store in Coney street and will be sorry if it goes.

Id be happy to see both these companies gone. Out dated, overpriced goods with sales staff who are so blindingly ignorant of what they are selling. Dreadful aftersales and inflexible deliveries. Good riddance.

Well said meme, at last someone who has their head screwed on properly.
York is, & always will be, dependent on tourism so why don't we start to embrace it instead of fighting it. Before moving to York I used to visit the city as a tourist & the beauty of the place was the main reason for my moving here.
CYC should give meme a job.

High street shops are disappearing because of bad service. The only incentive for customers to eschew cheap web prices is to deal with friendly & helpful staff. While I haven't had a problem with this branch, the "service" I received from some sullen, slovenly and indolent blob at Clifton Moor six months ago (never to return) convinced me to buy all my electrical gear from Amazon in the future. If high street rents prevent shops competing with web prices then they really need to look into enhancing the "shopping experience" like, dare I say, the yanks do.

meme, york says...

We are heading for a major slowdown in retail and there is little YCC can do to stop retailers leaving the City. This is a national issue not local
However YCC can make York attractive to outsiders to come here boosting all the York economy in the process. This will be at the expense of other areas like Leeds and Harrogate and given our heritage we have a head start but this includes attracting tourists and I am aware of some of the views but if York did not have tourists it would not be half the City it is. We should welcome them and the problems they bring with open arms and do all we can to encourage more.
That means compromise on issues such as City centre access and parking charges, Park and Ride facilities, accomodation ie hotels/guest houses etc and novel thinking as to events which will attract people. That includes oldies and youngsters ie rock concerts as well as the more traditional events. We need to create a night time economy that embraces all not just teenages on the rampage.
We need a cafe culture which will make the city vibrant day and night
We all know people bring problems but we have to learn to live with these issues and minimise them if we can as York needs them to stay relatively prosperous
