YORK City midfielder Nicky Wroe has been placed on the transfer list after claims he no longer wants to play for the club.

But any interested parties would need to pay a five-figure fee for the 22-year-old's services with Wroe under contract to the KitKat Crescent club until the end of next season.

The former Barnsley midfielder joined City in August after starting the season in Scotland with Hamilton Academicals following his release by the Oakwell club.

He signed a one-year deal with the Minstermen inserting an option to retain his services for a further ten months, which was exercised last month.

Wroe, who made 27 starts and scored ten goals last season, was also offered improved terms but is now hoping to leave City according to club officials, fuelling speculation he has been offered a better deal elsewhere.

In a club statement, community and communications director Sophie McGill said: "Nicky Wroe has been placed on the transfer list following a statement by the player to Jason McGill and Colin Walker that he no longer wants to play for York City.

"Nicky Wroe signed a one-year contract last season with a further one-year option, which the club has since exercised. Although the club were under no obligation to improve the player's terms this season, Nicky Wroe was offered an enhanced contract, which is in line with the majority of his team-mates.

"York City also supported Nicky Wroe with his recent injury, paying £3,000 for an operation for the player in April. Nicky Wroe was set to be part of Colin Walker's plans for next season and everyone at the club is very disappointed he is not committed to the forthcoming campaign."

City boss Walker, who was instrumental in bringing Wroe to the club as Billy McEwan's assistant last year, agreed with the statement's sentiments.

Wroe was unavailable for comment.

Got to agree with that.
If I was a half decent player at York , I would be looking for a way out.
Seeing as the clubs owner openly stated that the club wasn't going anywhere for 4 to 5 years.
Why would anyone bother to stick around ?
The snide comments of the club board are nothing fresh. I suppose Wroes injury he got was from his part-time window cleaning round . No it was working for YCFC - if they don't have insurance to cover their employees and injuries - GET SOME !
But of course the public relations of the club are only used when a one-way attack is guaranteed.

sod him.yes,he was quality for us but any player who gets released by Hamilton Academicals and then given a chance in a team like york should really show some loyalty back. do you rewally think anybody would want you if city didn't pay 3 grand for your operation and you couldn't play Nicky...?

Good luck nicky if you can get a better deal,i dont blame you for trying to look after yourself cos if col didnt want you you would have been dumped along with many other players who have been at the end of the season and left to sort your life out and after a couple of days nobody would of cared.

Very disappointed by this, Wroe is the only central midfielder we have who has a clue what to do when in possession and if we have spent money on an op for him we could quite rightly expect some more loyalty...

It's all very well people saying York should stand their ground and let him rot in the reserves, but he's on good money that could be used to sign someone who does want to play, particularly when Walker said he'd work with a smaller squad next season.

Although Wroe is out of order in his actions, I'm tired of fans talking about players lacking loyalty like both Bishops and Donaldson. The only loyalty footballers need to have is to themselves and their family. They have a short career and have to look after themselves. Remember it is York who choose to put them on one-year deals with options for the second. Once they complete that, why shouldn't they look at better offers?

Another thought. Sign new players to minimum wage contracts, but with big win bonuses and reasonable draw supplements, both predicated on the size of the most recent crowd.

Keep him here for the rest of his contract. Don't play him at all, but put him on boot cleaning duties. Then every couple of weeks fine him two weeks wages on some trumped up charge like professional misconduct or cheeking the cleaning lady. No wages, no problem.

Get rid of this greedy ba****d as fast as possible!we don't need people like this.I personally liked wroe,but this is amazing considering 7 months ago he couldn't even get in our team.If he doesn't want to play and commit to our club then my attitude is "bye then".shame we probably can't afford to let him rot in the reserves for a year then he'd be completely out of of a job with no football prospects at all!tosser.

It makes you wonder why is the player not happy ? Is it he has had a better offer on the quiet is he unimpressed with the chairmans middle of the table for ever speach..someone needs to find out and sort it, to keep a good player, but there again maybe Jason (middle of the conference)is the wrong man ... I suggest Sophie sorts it .......

What a carry on!!. What a shame about Wroe, he did show the quaility to help city with the fight to get out of this dreadful league. However, this young chap should not just leave for nothing. I would be more than happy to lose his wages in the reserves than allow this disgraceful behavior. Make a stand Jason over this situation. It will only happen again if not. Has for Wroe's attitude, hang your head in shame young man.

Once again, we end the season by loosing one of our better players, in Nicky Wroe. Whereas loosing Clayton Donaldson to a SPL club was acceptable, the successive loss of Bishop to Bury & Bishop to Barnet were les so, as these two teams hardly set League 2 alight! Once again a sign of greed & selfishness of our modern players. I believe Bishop is looking to move again?
Nicky Wroe is another player, going nowhere @ Barnsley, who was given a chance to impress @ York, who took the opportunity & then bites the hand of the club & supporters who gave him a chance. If that's the way he feels, get rid & encourage those players (perhaps less talented) but stil have some honesty & respect, yes not easy to find @ any level of professional football these days?

This is a great shame because Nicky was one of our better midfielders and on the field he did look committed to the cause. I can only echo other people's thoughts that another club have offered him higher wages, however he is under contract to us and he should respect that. I hope he goes for that 5 figure sum asap, as he has disrepsected the club and fans. If he does rot in the reserves then that's his problem, we CANNOT just cut him loose because he wants to go, no player is bigger than the club. I sincerely hope this situation is resolved quickly the club gets the best deal, not Nicky SELFISH Wroe.

I think the situation with Wroe is a little different to those with Andy and Neal Bishop. Both were out of contract and got a chance to play in the Football League. Footballers have 10-12 year careers and have to look after themselves, no matter how loyal fans think they should be.

However, Wroe is stuck under contract and York now face an issue over whether to keep paying his wages and let him rot in the reserves or get rid and use the money on a player who does want to play. I say cut him adrift.

If this is true & Wroe no longer wants to play for York City,then get rid -simple as.
If he thinks the grass is greener elsewhere,good riddance.
Lets focus on who wants to pull on the shirt.
