POLICE are urging residents to "grass" on drug users as part of a major crackdown beginning today.

The dangers of super-strength "skunk" cannabis will be the focus of police action this week as officers in York and North Yorkshire take part in a Drugs Action Week.

Under the banner of "Grass on Skunk", North Yorkshire Police are urging members of the community to inform officers about anyone who they think may be using or dealing the drug.

Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Read, who is leading the operation, said: "This potent form of cannabis has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, and there is a body of evidence to suggest it can cause serious mental and physical harm. It is also seen as a gateway drug' to more addictive and damaging illegal substances such as cocaine and heroin.

"Up and down the country, drugs are a scourge on society. They break up families and literally destroy lives.

"We cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend we in North Yorkshire and the city of York have escaped this national problem. The stark reality is that drugs are present in our communities and, worryingly, are often not far from our own doorsteps.

"Therefore it is vital that we work together to tackle the issue from all angles - through strict police enforcement, education and awareness, and direct medical help, support and intervention - as will be ably demonstrated throughout the Drugs Action Week."

Det Supt Read said residents who have concerns about drug dealing and drug use in their community, can play a key part in the policing aspect of the campaign.

He said: "The Grass on Skunk' slogan means just that: we're actively urging members of the public to contact North Yorkshire Police to tip us off about skunk cannabis dealers and all other drug-related activity. We will then do everything we can to act upon this invaluable intelligence and take decisive action."

The police campaign will be combined with a full programme of education, advice, awareness and support activities co-ordinated by the North Yorkshire & York Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT).

Sue Maddison, York's DAAT co-ordinator, said: "Too often we hear about the problems that are caused by illicit drugs, without the public having the opportunity to see the wider aspects of partnership work and how effective drug treatment and enforcement can be as part of a co-ordinated approach.

"There is a great deal of work that is undertaken by partners to tackle drugs which will be highlighted by some of the activities taking place this week."

The local campaign runs until Saturday, and coincides with the Home Office's National Tackling Drugs Week. Information should be passed onto North Yorkshire Police by phoning 0845 60 60 247, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Cannabis facts

* Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Britain* The main active compound in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) - which is often in higher quantities in "skunk"* The Home Office Cannabis Potency Study 2008 showed that herbal cannabis accounted for 81 per cent of all cannabis seized by the police on the street when giving a warning to users* Significantly, 97 per cent of that herbal cannabis was skunk * Since 1990, when skunk first appeared in the UK, its potency has slowly increased * The average age of first use is 13, and young people may binge on skunk in the same way as alcohol* If they do, the independent Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs found that the consequences of this "may be serious to their mental health"* Currently cannabis is a Class C drug and it is illegal to have, sell or give away* The maximum penalty of possessing cannabis is two years in prison, and the maximum you can get for dealing is 14 years in prison.

This has nothing to do with whether today's cannabis is materially any different to that which our political class indulged in, or even any actual harm that might be caused to a very small number of people, but simply the continued insanity of denying millions of adults access to a commodity that normally grows outdoors with the benefit of tropical sunshine.
It's patently much less hazardous per unit of consumption than alcohol so legalise it.
While this sideshow distracts attention, why not have a think about the real problem of half a million heroin addicts that the UK's approach to drugs has created. Maybe it's because we're an island ?
the roots of drug and alcohol abuse go deeper than most of us wish to acknowledge.

Well said Barrisimo.

Lamplighter - I think you need to check your facts. The vast majority of 'skunk' was actually developed by the Dutch to reduce reliance on imported sources

Just more Labour policy that nobody wants. When are we going to vote this bunch of idiots out of power? High petrol prices, 'green' taxes on the way, stupid drugs policy, economy out of control, fighting wars nobody wants, dictating European policy to the population...We have put up with it all for far too long.

I have read that it is harder to stop smoking than it is to kick heroin.

Probably because it is sold in measured amounts and is ordinary cannabis and not skunk.

I had some comments removed from here earlier. I basically said that cannabis was no worse than alcohol or tobacco and that the York Press sensationalise, and even lie about drugs quite frequently. One example was when they said you got 30 lines of cocaine per gram.

As I stated earlier, I do not do drugs in any shape or form, but see nothing wrong with a bit of weed.

What utter nonsense and a waste of my tax let me quote from the recent report from the advisory council on Drugs.

ACMD paragraph 12.11
the council does not consider the risk of progression of class a drugs as a consequence of using cannabis to be substantial: and considers that such risks are likely to be less than those associated with the use of tobacco or alcohol.

So tobacco and alcohol or a greater risk to using harder drugs.

12.13
the evidence available to the council does not suggest that cannabis use is a substantial cause of acquisitive crime.

So the only crime really associated with cannabis is because we have made it illegal. Regulate and control for adults... poof there goes the crime...but it would mean our Police would have to actually tackle real crime rather than going after an easy non violent cannabis user.

This Police initiative is a total waste of resources your Tax is being wasted. When will we wake up to the stupidity surrounding the laws andcannabis use in our society the ACMD sent a message but the fools in power just didn't listen...madness

"POLICE are urging residents to "grass" on drug users as part of a major crackdown beginning today............

My interpretation is that they are also targeting the users as well - wasting money on what appears to be the politically correct drug hot topic.

And as for the posting by Maryjane - all drugs have inherent risks, alcohol and tabacco being prime examples. The point I was making is that it's not often that stoners go out robbing and thieving to feed their habit unlike a lot of smack users that do.

I also agree with Tracey's posting - Holland is a wonderful country and as she quite rightly points out, half the population is not mentally ill!!

you can't really say one drug is more dangerous than another, it depends how much and how often you're using and whether or not you're prone to mental health problems cos not everyone is.

Lol weed can be a pretty anti-social drug if you're programmed that way, anyone who's used it on a regular basis or knows someone that has would know that

I quite agree! If the Police want to waste OUR money on targeting people who like the odd spliff then I despair! Of course, this will have nothing to do with our old friend Gordon Brown who appears to have placed skunk in the same moral bracket as smack, despite his own advisors saying their was no evidence to reclassify the drug.

Skunk does not have the same anti-social effects that heroin and other class A drugs do - these should be the drugs they are chasing, not a class C drug. Heroin addicts beg, borrow and most of the time steal to feed their habits which has a huge impact on wider society. Instead of going after the spliff smokers, they should try burglars - our basement flat was broken into on Saturday, exactly one week to the day when it was last broken into. The police have said it will probably be "bag-heads" looking for enough money to get their next fix. As far as I'm concerned, the Police should leave the spliff smokers alone and do something about the scroates that think I should pay to feed their habit.
Agree 100%.
