TWO men were both knocked unconscious as they walked home from nights out in York in seemingly unprovoked attacks, police revealed today.

So far North Yorkshire Police are not linking the attacks, which took place in the same area on different nights, and both involved weapons.

In the first incident a man was walking home at 3.10am on Saturday morning when he was struck on the back of the head, rendering him unconscious.

He was walking down Monkgate before turning right into Heworth Green, where he was attacked close to the junction with Dodsworth Avenue.

The second victim was attacked at just before 1am yesterday, and again he was struck from behind, knocking him unconscious.

This time the man had been walking home along Monkgate, but carried straight on into Huntington Road. Following his attack a group of students assisted him at the junction of Huntington Road and Ramsay Close.

So far police say while they are treating both as serious assaults, at this stage they are not connecting the incidents, which they have described as seemingly unprovoked.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We are wanting to speak to anyone who witnessed either attack, particularly we would like to speak to the students who helped the second victim."

Anyone with information should phone PC Claire Manley on 0845 6060245.

On a serious note, these attacks were carried out close to where the poor chap was pulled from the river at Christmas. Perhaps there should be more police vigilance outwith the city walls of a night, especially at a time when people are making their way home.

agreed. Officially no connection has been made, but there roughly of the same type of attack in the same location (give or take) and they were very serious assaults. This is a very busy walkway on a night as I can attest to living where I do and people are up and down the street at all times of the night, making them easy targets, especially after having a few shandies in the town. Let's hope the police make inroads and fast before this escalates.

Funny, we still keep reading that crime is down in York!!! and the streets safe to walk down!! sensible people who live in York do know better!!! as for police well they are hanging around outside the night clubs - then when all the drunken yobs and screaming women leave the premises, they clear off leaving the drunks shouting fighting and yelling to go on well into the early hours, infact till 4am in the city centre.

This area seems to have become a hotbed for anti social behaviour of late. I have heard tell of several car crimes and the glass in the public phone booth on Heworth Green got broken on an almost nightly basis a few weeks ago. Still I am sure that our fine Constabulary will collate all evidence and soon bring the perpetrators to justice, as soon as they have finished complaining about their "terrible " pay and conditions of course, first things first.

well if the government didnt scrimp we may have more police on the streets with more powers like we did in the 80s the law was respected then but criminals had no rights
