AFTER an "enjoyable" 12 months in post, the Lord Mayor of York will be handing over the chains of office tomorrow.

In the past year, Coun Irene Waudby has celebrated a raft of anniversaries in the city, nurtured York's relationship with its German twin city Munster, and even been a judge at Miss York.

But Coun Waudby, who is the first woman in York's history to be Lord Mayor twice - holding the title previous in 2001-2 - said the highlight of her rein in office had "undoubtedly" been meeting so many interesting people at various engagements in the city.

She said: "I and my civic party would like to express our thanks to all who have invited us to their events and special occasions.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many people.

"It has been a joy to be involved in all that makes this city such a friendly, welcoming and cosmopolitan one."

She said she was pleased to have been able to raise funds for the Lord Mayor's chosen charities, and also The Press's Guardian Angels appeal.

Her charities, the York Blind And Partially Sighted Society and Martin House Hospice, have expressed their gratitude after the Lord Maypr's fundraising activities boosted their coffers by £50,000.

Diane Roberts, head of fundraising at the Blind And Partially Sighted Society, said: "Every event we have asked them to attend, they have been delighted to do so.

"The Lord Mayor has also been brilliant in providing us with publicity and, of course, helping raise much-needed funds. We are very grateful."

The past year also marked a milestone for the Lord Mayor and her consort - their Ruby Wedding.

Coun Waudby and her husband, Derek, who have two children, Helen and Mark, and one grandson, Ruairi, marked their 40th wedding anniversary in July last year.

When asked if she might make history again by being Lord Mayor a third time, Coun Waudby said: "Never say never."

Not really an over eaction. Its a high profile job involving maybe 3 or more engagements a day and to keep smiling and polite and do the job as classily as Irene takes some doing.

A schoolboy once saw the Lord Mayor of London's procession and then wrote in his diary that "The Lord Mayor has many affairs in the City, and rides in a coach covered in guilt!"
Not so for York's Lord Mayors, who besides their various Civic duties, must chair the monthly meetings of the full Council. It will not have been an easy task this Civic year for Irene, with the present hung Council. Her task of steering Members through their deliberations while herself remaining neutral will surely have been an unenviable one.
I had the pleasure of escorting the present Civic Party round the 2007 York Cycle Show, shortly after they took office. Irene was very interested in all that was going on, and admirably fulfilled her role. Next month I will be doing likewise with her successor
Sorry to disappoint Mr "Crack Fox", but Irene has been an superb asset for York

I think this is a pointless waste of money, and see no point in a Mayor or a Sheriff. The Mayor gets more freebies than MP's, and yes, she attended a lot of functions, but she ate and drank well at all of them.

She raised 50k for charity? Well if we didnt have this expensive, uneccessary cost of having a Mayor, I bet there would be more than £50k available to donate.

nor do they really fund the Lord Mayor. Considerin it is a full time position most people would be financially worse off from taking this position.

in future please try to have at least a sembling of understanding before publishing your ill conceived rants

I didnt say that did I???

I said it probably costs well in excess of £50k to have a mayor. And a sheriff for that matter. Getting ferried about all over the place wont be cheap, then theres her expenses, I wonder how much they are.

Tell me, are you a fan of Margaret Thatcher?

I do think that Cruddass is somewhat cynical,All cities need a system of control also discipline,In this, the Mayor has an important part to help govern meetings, Having said this, would accept this job?...

They should maybe count the links on her chain of office when she hands it back.
York City Council is rife with thieving individuals, especially in the Council Chambers!

Fly on the walls I hope tongue in cheek comment reminds me of the occassion on of our past Lord Mayors was invited to go gliding. He climbed into the passenger seat wearing the chains and the chaffeur came over and asked for the chains for safe keeping assuring the Lord Mayor "We can replace you but not the chains."
