DRIVERS faced lengthy delays after a crash closed one lane of the A64 at Tadcaster in the morning rush hour today.

Two cars - a Volkswagen Jetta and an Audi A6 - were involved in a collision on the A64 westbound at around 7.50am this morning taking the dual carriageway down to one lane.

The accident happened near Tadcaster between the A659 and the A1 junctions. No one suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision and the road was reopened fully by 9am.

Meanwhile there were lengthy delays on the A19 at Crockey Hill with traffic queuing as drivers tried to take a diversionary route to avoid the A64 tailbacks.

Only just happened at 8.15, nearly hit them myself.
Probably driving too close to the car in front by the look of it.
A hard shoulder would help but reducing the speed limit to 50mph is just idiotic, why not go the whole way and make everyone walk?

Agreed, reducing the speed limit will achieve nothing. I personally believe that the current speed limit is antiquated & bears no relevence to todays vehicles which are more economical & safer than the tin box death traps of the 1960s.

Two cars going in the same direction on a dual carriageway and coming together suggests to me a rear-end shunt (though admittedly, this is speculation on my part). The main cause of these accidents is tailgating - car B drives to close behind car A, car A has to decelerate quickly for some reason (e.g. a vehicle joins the carriageway from a slip road), and then crunch.

If automated number plate recognition is possible, it must surely be possible to invent cameras that can be placed at regular intervals on a fast dual carriageway to detect drivers who habitually cruise too close behind the vehicle in front of them, and for the video evidence to then be used to support a charge of driving without due care and attention.

If you could get the message through that tailgating is dangerous and unnecessary, I'm sure that a lot of accidents on relatively high-speed rural roads could be prevented.

i think i went by that, but the traffic was being quite sensible around it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was probably caused by a tractor causing a tail back!...I cannot understand why tractors are not banned from public highways between 7am -> 9am, and 4pm -> 6pm...The insurance companies would love it!!!

Ah, Linda, another one of the "speed kills" brainwashed experts!

Reducing the speed limits will not achieve anything other than drawing in more revenue from beleagured motorists that just want to get from A to B at a speed which modern cars and roads permit. What IS needed is better training, tougher tests and the total removal of all uninsured, untaxed, un-mot'd vehicles and unlicenced drivers from our roads.

Reducing speeds will increase frustration and more likely lead to more accidents.

I pulled into a layby on the 1237 the other evening for a 10 minute break and decided to count "problem" cars as they passed. In just 10 minutes there were 15 drivers glued to their mobiles, 4 without seatbelts, 2 unintelligible number plates and one car came passed spewing out so much crud I thought it must be coal powered! Oh an dnot a plod car in sight.....

end of rant
