OLD timers and cute canines will be vying for rosettes as they strut their stuff at an animal charity’s open day this weekend.

The RSPCA is staging the competition to find the Best Dog of the Year at its Landings Lane site in Clifton tomorrow with awards including happiest hound, best old timer and prettiest pooch.

The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Brian Watson, and the RSPCA’s chief inspector, Geoff Edmond, will be judging the show for rescue dogs with the winner going through to the regional heat.

Robert Thompson, chairman of the RSPCA’s York and District branch, said the open day aimed to raise awareness of its work as well as cash for the site, which needs £1,300 a day. He also hoped people might find a dog they liked and take it as a pet.
