ART chiefs yesterday pleaded with vandals to stop sabotaging York’s open air art gallery, after a number of items in it were stolen or defaced.

Three of the 49 replica paintings hung around York city centre as part of the Grand Tour initiative have now been stolen, and although all have been found again, several others have been vandalised. Professional restorers have had to be brought in on an almost daily basis.

Michael Woodward, director of business development at York Museums Trust, said yesterday: “The thefts and vandalism are a concern as it takes a lot of time and effort to keep the paintings looking their best. So far all the stolen paintings have been recovered close by, so we have been able to put them back for the public to enjoy. Graffiti has been a problem and the team of restorers have had to be called almost daily.

“We appreciate the imagination that some people have put in, but we do urge them to stop and let everyone enjoy the paintings in their original condition.”

Examples of doodles on the paintings include:
•A telephone placed in the hand of Madame Moitessier in the portrait by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres
•A nipple ring added to Delilah, on Samson And Delilah by Rubens
•A paper bag placed over the head of the Grotesque Old Woman attributed to Quinten Massys
•A cannabis joint placed in the hand of Christ, in The Supper At Emmaus by Caravaggio.

The Press previously reported how Claude-Oscar Monet’s Bathers At La Grenouillere had been stolen from Dame Judi Dench Walk. It was subsequently found in the Museum Gardens.

Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire was also removed, from King’s Staith, but was found nearby shortly afterwards.

The most recent theft was of Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers, which had been hanging at St Helen’s Church. It too was recovered.

Despite the damage and thefts, Mr Woodward said the innovative, open-air exhibition was proving popular.

He said: “The Grand Tour in York seems to have really struck a chord with the people of Yorkshire and the response has been overwhelming.

“The leaflets telling people where the paintings are have been in real demand and the comments made by visitors to staff at the sites run by York Museums Trust have all shown real support for the project. The website, www.thegrandtourinyork.org.uk, has already had more than 5,000 visitors.

“The special History Of York tour on the site is proving very popular.”

What on earth did the blithering idiots expect to happen?

I'm sorry but every single one of those incidents of vandalism is rather funny. Everyone knew there would be some casualties for the open art exhibition but if the worst so far is only comical thats not too bad.

Any half wit could have forseen acxts of mindless vandalism against the works of art!
What were the LibDems thinking of, if they indeed do think?

Who had the idea these paintings were going to be respected by the one percent of York residents that are total pond life? These people don't respect newly planted trees! Come down from cloud cuckoo land and join the real world. The one you are playing politics with.

Well really, what did they expect? I think the council should put up similar paintings or posters and let the people add to it...it is rather amusing!

It's hardly mindless vandalism - that would be smashing them or mindless scrawls. What's reported is actually rather amusing, I think.

And as others have commented, this shouldn't really be a surprise - it's what most people would have predicted would happen.

Whoever decided to put the pictures up around York must have been naive and thinking that we still live in times when people didnt behave like that. This is the noughties. It is funny really and I hope the council has learnt its lesson.

Realistically, it would have been better to have engaged with the punters from the start by positively inviting "contributions". With suitable lamination of the paintings, they could have have been photographed then cleaned every morning, and the wittiest additions published in the esteemed pages of the Press. This would really bring art to the people.

Those who want to appreciate the reproductions in the conventional way could see them in the Art Gallery a few minutes' walk away, perhaps alongside photos of the "enhanced" versions from the riverbank.

If the peple organising this didn't see it coming they really shouldn't be in charge of these kind of things.

The nipple ring one however did make me chuckle, subtlety is always a welcmoe humour.

Is York simply full of mindless, uncontrollable cretins who submit to every "creative" urge and whim?

It is simply astounding (not to mention depressing) that the majority of comments on here take the indulgent line of "what did they expect to happen?" What a weak, submissive, and ultimately telling response.

Perhaps the galleries involved and City of York Council expected the citizens of York to be able to control themselves and appreciate the art for what it is - not as ready canvasses for their own "hilarious" contributions.

NO doubt it was all expected and a budget has been set aside for correcting any damage. At least the graffiti has been creative and artistic . None of the paintings have been stolen so all is well. The joy of seeing them each day far surpasses the negative element.

As others have said it was, sadly, predictable that a certain amount of vandalism would occur. However, for future exhibitions, I have a suggestion. Instead of having to call in 'professional restorers' each time it occurs wouldn't it be possible to mount each picture behind a piece of removable, and cheap, clear plastic? If vandalised this could either be cleaned or removed and replaced.

urm.. surely the paintings must be waterproof anyway so cant they just wash it off? I like the idea of the laminating them and having best art competition ;)
