LIFE is to be made easier for Selby residents who want to discover more about council services with the opening of a new walk-in advice centre.
The Access Selby office is being set up to replace the district council's current information-providing base at the town's Civic Centre and is intended to operate as a one-stop shop for queries.
Based in the Market Cross area in Selby town centre, it will allow people to speak directly to members of staff about recycling, housing, planning applications, highways, education and other issues. It will also offer a hassle-free way of registering for bus passes and paying council tax.
Until now, the first point of contact about council business for town residents has been the council offices in Portholme Road, but often led to a frustrating wait to speak to the right person or department. The Access Selby team said the new office - set to open next Tuesday - will cut this out.
Coun Ruth Sayner, the council's access to services champion, said: "We feel it's really important for people to be able to get information and advice and be able to directly access the services they need as easily as possible.
"That's why we've invested in developing the Access Selby office. This new way of working will also enable backroom council staff to work more efficiently, as achieving value for money and working as efficiently as possible is an important objective for us."
The new office is part of the council's "Putting Customers First" strategy, which also involves developing its website to allow services to be accessed online day and night.
Gill Cashmore, of the Selby Association of Voluntary Services (AVS), which represents a string of local community groups, says Access Selby will smooth the path to important information for people living in the area.
"The opening of the office follows the opening of the AVS Community House building, which is our own one-stop shop for information about community and voluntary sector issues," she said.
"Together, these services mean the public will be very well-served in terms of being able to easily access information and support. I congratulate the council on their efforts. This will benefit the whole community."
The Access Selby office will run alongside council centres in Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster, while the existing Civic Centre offices will remain in place until they are relocated to the new joint Selby Hospital and Civic Centre development planned for Doncaster Road.
