SCHOOL inspectors have published a positive report on Ampleforth College, the North Yorkshire Roman Catholic private school.

Head teacher Father Gabriel Everitt said: "I and the staff have been encouraged by the findings of the inspection.

"The school found the inspection a searching, positive and helpful experience and we are pleased with this report."

The report found "high levels of physical and spiritual nurture and care of pupils, good teaching and learning, and an extensive range of games and activities".

It commented favourably on the relationships among pupils and between pupils and teachers that are "warm, encourage trust and are supportive", finding that pupils had a very wide range of adults to whom to turn for help and friendly advice.

The report said there was scope to "share best practice and to extend the range of teaching strategies beyond those that are set to meet the requirements of public examinations".

Father Gabriel said: "The inspection team found evidence that initiatives in both areas were under way, and have encouraged us to develop them more fully."
