With regard to recent letters (Yes, I am disabled, May 21, Blue badge surprise, May 27, The badge rules, June 4), I wish to voice my opinion as follows.

As a blue badge holder myself, I read back with interest to the beginning of this story to see where the saga started.

Originally, Louise Dale - quite rightly - wrote regarding the scowls of disapproval and often disparaging comments from anyone over a "certain age" towards those of us well under the age of retirement who dare to park in the disabled bays.

It is a constant annoyance to my family and me to see members of the older generation with just one stick glaring at us in the blue badge parking bays until I skulk into my wheelchair.

Mrs Garbutt's comments were totally unfounded, not to mention ignorant, towards Louise and I can't help but wonder if she's one of said one-stick-walkers who partake in the scowling.

Also, as a blue badge holder, Louise will receive regular assessments of her needs - if and when she recovers, her badge will be rescinded. As a former employee of City of York Council's blue badge department, I'm surprised Mrs Garbutt didn't consider this.

I'll just clarify for the record, I have progressive multiple sclerosis and at 43 will be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I do not seek pity by stating this; I merely wish to fend off similar comments from those too rude, ignorant and/or opinionated to try to understand.

Good luck, Louise, I hope you do get back on your feet - anyone who suggests you don't need the badge, though, should walk a week in your shoes.

Helen Birdsall, Osbaldwick Lane, York.
