FORMER workers from a York factory which employed disabled people have taken their fight to Westminster.

Members of York Remploy's 51-strong workforce travelled to London yesterday to lobby ministers over the closure of the Redeness Street site.

Former deputy shop steward, John Wilson, 58, of Tang Hall, said it was important workers continued to let the Government know that they believe the closure was wrong.

Mr Wilson said: "We fought long and hard against the closure and I think it's important to show the Government that we will continue to fight for something we believe in."

In March, The Press reported how hopes the city's Remploy plant might be granted a last-ditch reprieve by Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to nothing. Following a final ceremony at the Redeness Street site, the workers - many of whom chose to take voluntary redundancy rather than try to secure other jobs through Remploy's employment service - said an emotional farewell to the factory which was been a huge part of their lives.

They now face an uncertain future as they look for mainstream employment, with unions saying they will be left exposed and forced into low-paid work by the Government's decision to close the York site and 27 other factories.

Mr Wilson, who opted to accept a redundancy pay-off, said: "We all feel empty, drained and let down."

Worker Sandra Reynolds, 41, had spent the last decade at Remploy and said: "We feel we've lost everything and the Government has done nothing to help us. I've taken voluntary redundancy because I don't have any faith in Remploy finding me a job, but whatever I do now, it won't be the same."

Are the Remploy workers right to keep on fighting?

Of course they're right to keep on fighting, just like the Press journalists are right to keep on fighting.

It looks to me as though the Press is padding out the site with stories filed on previous days; I'm sure I saw Haydn Lewis on the picket line this morning (apologies if I'm mistaken).

Whats the point in fighting the inevitable.... and for the record, the press strike, greed.... its a small publication and to be honest most of the storys suck... the journalists (if they can laughingly be called that) should be greatful anyone pays them at all for the weak storys they produce!

Funny how the comment facility has disappeared on the York Journalists' strike story.... -

Fortunately, the journalists with any integrity are still providing us with news - http://www.nujyork.b

the size of the Press is irrelevant; the parent company made $1,000,000,000 profit last year, but they want their workers to accept a pay rise of 3%, which amounts to a pay cut, when you consider how quickly prices are rising.

To me that looks like a greedy company, not greedy journalists.

that's ok.
with less "news" today because some "journalists" are having a day off, your repeated posting fills the space nicely. It'll be printed in tomorrow's Press.....

Congratulations to the striking York Press journalists on their blog website at http://www.nujyork.b

There are pictures of the picket line, the latest updates on the strike and even a link to a protest song on You Tube.
Good luck!

Support the striking journalists!

Think the quality of The Press is declining. Maybe that's because the newsroom is seriously understaffed after a bout of redundancies in 2006. Newsquest is a rapacious company that cuts back to the bone. The journalists are fighting for more than simply pay. Log on to www.nujyork.blogspot

How are they any different from the tens of thousands of people across the UK in similar situations?

The disabled are always talking about equal rights but then when something like this happens, they seem to want special treatment because they're disabled. If the able-bodied are screwed over by factory closures, why should the disabled be exempt?

I'm going to be controversial and suggest that their time would be better spent looking for another job and developing new skills.
