SOME of York's most distinctive new and converted buildings have been honoured in the York Design Awards.

Ten buildings have received an award in recognition of excellence in conservation and in outstanding distinctive contemporary design.

Among those to pick up an award at last night's ceremony at the city's Merchant Adventurers' Hall were the National Science Learning Centre and the University Library and Archives, both at the University of York, York College and Acomb Library Learning College. The Lord Mayor's Award, a special accolade which was introduced this year, was presented for an extension to a private dwelling - Oak Cottage at Crockey Hill.

Launched in November last year, the competition was open to all new build and conservation, conversion and landscape developments within the City of York Council boundary completed between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007. Ken Powell, chairman of the judging panel said: "The standard of entries was very high this year and the ten buildings have been awarded for distinctive design."

The other winners were 3 to 5 Blake Street, Gypsy Wood Cottage in Dunnington, the Eco Depot, Novus 1-8 Opus Avenue and Rufforth School Community Hall.

Agree completely Silver, It's not as
if people are clambering to get on
here to comment on these marvellous accolades.

Great win for Leeds nevertheless.

Maybe the architects of the proposed carbuncle council HQ building need to be looking at these for inspiration instead of drawing up ideas on the back of a fag packet. Under the current plan they don't have a cat in h*lls chance of ever seeing any design award unless there's a category for biggest costly architectural mistake!!!!
