YOUNGSTERS at a York primary school are set to recreate celebrations their predecessors held 63 years ago.
To conclude their topic about the Second World War, children in Years 3 and 4 at Dringhouses Primary School will hold a Victory In Europe Day-style party on Thursday.
The school playground will be turned into what it might have looked like in May 1945, after news broke that the Allies had defeated Germany.
Tables will be set up for a tea party celebration to enable the children to experience how it might have felt to discover that the war was finally over.
To add to the fun and authenticity of the day, the children will be singing songs and playing games from the era, and getting into character by dressing up in make do and mend' style.
As part of their topic, the children have also visited Eden Camp museum in Malton and many have shared a family experience of the Second World War, all of which have helped to bring the topic to life.
Class teacher, Sara Storey, said: "We are all looking forward to our VE Day celebration, which we are sure will be a stimulating, fun and memorable occasion for our pupils. Children at Dringhouses Primary School embrace such learning opportunities with great energy and enthusiasm and this shows through in the quality of the work they produce in class and in their homework activities."
Dringhouses School opened in 1863 and was originally a small village school for about 65 children.
Since then it has grown to its present size of around 315 pupils.
The Press reported last year that youngsters at the school celebrated the completion of their early years unit.
